Turkish FM to attend 2nd Berlin Conference

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu will pay a visit to Germany to attend the Second Berlin Conference on the situation in Libya to be held on June 23.

According to the Turkish Foreign Ministry, the conference is co-chaired by the UN and Germany. The event will focus on the peaceful conclusion of the December 24 elections in Libya.

The power vacuum and conflict in Libya after the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011 led to a civil war.

In April 2019, military operations began between the UN-recognized central government and Khalifa Haftar, a field commander backed by Egypt and the UAE, who controls the eastern part of the country. The conflict ended with the participation of Turkey. A ceasefire was signed in October 2020 and entered into force in March this year. Libya is scheduled to hold presidential and parliamentary elections on December 24, 2021.
