As much as 212 billion Turkish liras were invested in the railways of Turkey in 2003-2020, Turkish Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Adil Karaismailoglu said, Report informs.
The minister noted that the country's railway network had been updated. According to him, the length of the railway in Turkey has reached 12,803 kilometers.
At present, 3,500 kilometers of the railway are under construction.
"We are working intensively to electrify all our railways," Adil Karaismailoglu stressed.
According to the minister, work on the production of the first domestic electric train with a speed of 176 kilometers per hour has been completed, and the train will soon serve passengers.
Karaismailoglu noted that railways are an essential transport system for reducing carbon emissions in the transport sector.
"By 2025, more than half of the energy consumed by the State Railways of the Republic of Turkey (TCDD) will come from renewable energy sources. To date, 1,753 kilometers or 45% of Turkey's railways have been electrified," he added.
