Tokayev denies rumors of plans to head UN

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has denied rumors launched on social networks that he plans to head the UN in 2026, Report informs.

He was speaking in an interview with the Ana Tili newspaper.

"I had to head the UN Geneva Office as Deputy Secretary-General of the UN and Secretary-General of the Conference on Disarmament. I gained useful experience and understanding of the mechanisms of international processes. I believe this is more than enough. I have big plans for the development of the country for many years to come, which I intend to implement," Tokayev emphasized.

He noted that in the conditions of unprecedented geopolitical tension, Kazakhstan is pursuing a course to ensure security and sustainable economic development of the country.

Tokayev also noted that in the West, and throughout the world, Kazakhstan is called a middle power.

"This status, of course, obliges us to do a lot, first of all to responsible behavior in the international arena, a constructive approach to the most pressing problems of our time. Based on this, Kazakhstan is a consistent supporter of the UN as a "common home for all mankind", an uncontested and universal organization," the Kazakh leader said.

He noted that his main goal is to strengthen the economic potential, sovereignty and international positions of Kazakhstan.

"From the very beginning of my presidency and to this day, I have taken full responsibility for the decisions I make and their consequences; I cannot and do not want to work any other way," Tokayev summed up.
