Georgia could have faced the same situation as Ukraine if its government had not made firm and principled decisions at the start of 2022, Shalva Papuashvili, Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, told journalists, Report informs.
Papuashvili reflected on the leadership of former Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, highlighting his resistance to both internal and external pressures.
"We witnessed attacks and pressures against Garibashvili from inside and outside. Notably, there were attempts by the former ambassador of the Biden administration to push Georgia into confrontation with Russia. Thanks to the government's resilience, we managed to avoid war and destruction," Papuashvili emphasized.
He further noted that during the early days of the Russia-Ukraine war in February 2022, certain groups in Georgia pressured the government to act under foreign flags. "Had we followed their lead, within weeks we would have been in Ukraine's current situation," he remarked.
Papuashvili credited the political course implemented under the leadership of the Georgian Dream party for maintaining peace and shielding the country's youth from war.
