The Russian editor-in-chief of the independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta, Dmitry Muratov, has auctioned off his Nobel Peace Prize medal for $103.5 million, shattering the old record for a Nobel. Report informs, citing Deutsche Welle.
Heritage Auctions, which conducted the sale, has not revealed who the winning bidder was. Dmitry Muratov said all the money from the sale will go to help Ukraine's displaced children. The auction was held on June 20 - World Refugee Day.
Novaya Gazeta suspended its operations in March, shortly after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. He said they would resume after the war. The decision was made after Russia's Federal Communications, Information Technology and Media Control Service (Roskomnadzor) warned the newspaper that it would not be able to continue its work.
Dmitry Muradov, 60, was awarded the prize in 2021. He is the founder and editor-in-chief of Novaya Gazeta. He is the third Russian to receive the award, after Andrei Sakharov and Mikhail Gorbachev.
