Putin sends bill on citizenship to State Duma

Russian President Vladimir Putin has submitted a draft basic law "On the Citizenship of the Russian Federation" to the State Duma, Report informs that the text was published in the electronic database of the lower house of parliament.

"The provisions of the bill focus on granting citizenship of the Russian Federation to persons, who live in Russia, who are able to organically integrate into the system of positive social ties and become full-fledged members of Russian society," the explanatory note says.

The document outlines the key requirements for obtaining citizenship: knowledge of the Russian language, of the history of Russia, and of the basics of legislation, as well as the obligation to comply with the constitution and the absence of a threat to the country's security.

The bill provides for a reduction in the number of requirements for more than 20 categories of persons when obtaining citizenship. In particular, this applies to citizens of the former USSR and their children, persons with close relatives, citizens of the Russian Federation; persons who were born on the territory of the RSFSR before June 2, 1992, or served in the army before this date [in units under the jurisdiction of the Russian Federation on the territory of other states] and so on.
