President of Uzbekistan pardons 488 convicts

President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev signed a decree on 28 March pardoning a group of individuals serving sentences, who have sincerely repented and firmly chosen the path of reform, the president’s press service announced, Report informs via Gazeta.uz.

Under the decree, issued ahead of the Ramadan holiday (Eid al-Fitr), 488 individuals were pardoned. Among them, 100 are being fully released from their primary sentences, 268 granted conditional early release and 34 will have their sentences replaced with more lenient penalties. Additionally, prison terms for 86 individuals are being reduced.

The president instructed authorities to assist the pardoned individuals in reuniting with their families, supporting their social reintegration, engaging them in productive work, encouraging a healthy lifestyle and helping them take on a meaningful role in society, according to the decree’s commentary.
