Russia's updated nuclear doctrine could be seen as a signal to the US administration, which is carrying out an unprecedented escalation of the Ukraine conflict, said Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the Russian president, Report informs.

Responding to the question whether Russia's updated nuclear doctrine could be seen as a signal to the US administration, which approved the use of ATACMS ballistic missiles to strike deep into the Russian territory, Peskov said:

"Of course, there are no coincidences here, there are certain patterns.

Although President Vladimir Putin has ordered the preparation of changes to adapt our doctrine to the current confrontation environment provoked by Western states. Nevertheless, Putin must respond to the unprecedented escalation, which is primarily provoked by the outgoing Washington administration."

Peskov noted that in this way, the outgoing US administration is taking increasingly reckless steps, escalating tensions around the Ukraine conflict.
