Media: Saakashvili's party to be headed by Georgia's ex-president

Giorgi Margvelashvili who headed Georgia in 2013-2018 will become chairman of the opposition United National Movement (UNM) party, Report's Georgian bureau informs, citing Rustavi 2 TV Channel.

Margvelashvili received an offer to head the party from party leader Mikheil Saakashvili, and the UNM has already made a corresponding decision.

The ex-president has not yet denied or confirmed this information.

Founded by Saakashvili in 2001, the UNM is considered the main opposition party in Georgia. The chairman of the party in 2017-2020 was former Foreign Minister Grigol Vashadze (2008-2012). Since December 2020, the party has been led by Nika Melia.
