Lavrov: Ukraine needs to hold presidential elections

Ukraine needs to hold presidential elections if the country wants a legitimate president. So far, only the Verkhovna Rada has legitimacy in Ukraine, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in an interview with Russian and foreign media, Report informs via Russian media.

"Regarding the legitimacy of the current Ukrainian government, president [of Russia Vladimir Putin] very clearly said on the direct line that Ukrainians must sort this out themselves in order to bring the situation in Kyiv into line with the Ukrainian constitution. For this, of course, if they want to have a legitimate president, they need to hold elections. But for now, according to the constitution, as Putin explained, only the Verkhovna Rada and, accordingly, its chairman have legitimacy," the minister noted.
