Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan may consider exchanging territories

Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan can consider the option of exchanging territories to resolve the border issue, Secretary of the Security Council of Kyrgyzstan, Marat Imankulov said in an interview with the state agency Kabar, according to Report.

"Demarcation work with Tajikistan is being completed. Of course, the process is not going so quickly. We have gone through two conflicts, unfortunately, with losses, both among civilians and military personnel. People are worried, there is fear in the border areas. This is both on our part and on their part," he said.

According to him, the catch is that the border in the Batken region passes through difficult sections, through populated areas.

Imankulov added that all processes relating to the determination of borders must proceed peacefully.

"We will complete this process without infringing on the interests of our citizens and the state, but at the same time taking into account the interests of the neighboring country. We work to ensure that they also take our interests into account. I hope we will complete everything this year," he said.

Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan have completed the description of 90% of the boundary. In 2023, topographic working groups held 15 meetings, as a result of which the description of 169.48 km was completed. In total, the border line between the two countries makes about 987.6 km.
