Kazakhstan passes amendments to abolish Nazarbayev's lifetime chairmanship of Security Council

Deputies of the Mazhilis (lower house) of the Kazakh parliament today approved amendments to the current legislation, according to which the life-long chairmanship of the first president of the republic, Nursultan Nazarbayev, in the Security Council and the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan (ANC) is canceled. Report informs citing TASS that Mazhilis MP Snezhanna Imasheva said.

"These amendments were introduced by deputies. You know perfectly well that this is an accomplished event that the president will head the assembly, the Elbasy himself [leader of the nation Nursultan Nazarbayev], and the Security Council said it. Therefore, there is nothing so extraordinary there to discuss them. This has already taken place. These amendments were made during the work of the committee. They are clarifying, editorial nature," Imasheva said.

Earlier it was reported that Kazakhstan is collecting signatures for a petition to deprive ex-President Nursultan Nazarbayev of immunity.
