Georgian PM backs decision to impeach president

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili accused President Salome Zourabichvili of defiantly violating the Constitution, Report informs via Interfax.

"It is written in our Constitution that foreign and domestic policy is carried out by the Government of Georgia, which in some cases can instruct the president to perform this function. With her visit to Europe, the president, without coordinating it with the government, defiantly violated the Constitution," Garibashvili said today at a government meeting.

He said that a month ago, Zourabichvili appealed to the government about visits to European countries, but she was refused.

"I want to clarify our reasoning about the refusal to the president. A few months ago, Zourabichvili publicly stated that the Georgian leadership was not fulfilling its obligations to obtain EU accession status. She also stated that last year Georgia was not worthy of receiving this status. After such statements, it would be wrong to delegate any powers to the president," Garibashvili said.

He noted that he supports the decision taken by the ruling Georgian Dream party to start impeachment proceedings against the president.

"The decision to impeach was absolutely justified," Garibashvili said.

The political council of the Georgian Dream last week announced the start of the impeachment proceedings against President Zourabichvili.
