Georgian expert: West refuses to relinquish influence in South Caucasus

The West does not want to lose its leverage over the South Caucasus. Therefore, it actively supports the “fifth column” in Georgia and meddling in the country’s internal affairs, Georgian political expert Levan Mamaladze told Report.

Mamaladze pointed out that Azerbaijan has faced similar attempts in the past but has successfully thwarted foreign interventions. Now, with Azerbaijan out of reach, the West has set its sights on Georgia.

"We know that the West will directly interfere in the upcoming Georgian elections. To prevent this, the parliament passed the 'Foreign Influence Transparency' law, which was a step towards curbing foreign meddling in the parliamentary elections. This law has somewhat weakened Western interference, but with the elections approaching, the West has begun actively financing NGOs and media outlets. They understand that if we neutralize this threat, we will protect our sovereignty," he stated.

The analyst emphasized the importance of these elections for Georgia, expressing confidence that the Georgian people will vote for those who deserve it and protect the country's sovereignty. "We will not allow the West, with its plans for a coup in Georgia, to succeed," he declared.

Mamaladze also highlighted Georgia's growing economic ties with various countries, particularly China, which has recently signed new agreements and joint projects with Georgia:

"China plans to access Europe through Georgia and Azerbaijan. The West is trying to prevent China from investing in these two countries, realizing that it will make them stronger. To hinder this process, they want to seize power in Georgia."

Mamaladze predicted that the ruling Georgian Dream party, which the people trust, will emerge victorious in the elections: "The winner will be the ruling party. The fifth column has no chance against the current party."

He anticipates that the West will release statements calling the elections fraudulent and organize protests and coup attempts, but these efforts will ultimately fail.

"On the other hand, they will impose sanctions on us. But I think the agreements signed with China will insure Georgia in this difficult situation. In short, I can say that the West will not be able to achieve its vile desires in Georgia, just as it failed in Azerbaijan,” Mamaladze added.
