The election of Georgia's sixth president has begun in the country's parliament.
As per Report, for the first time, the president is being elected not by direct popular vote, but at a meeting of a college consisting of 300 electors.
The college includes 150 members of the Georgian Parliament, 21 deputies of the Supreme Council of Adjara, 20 representatives of the Supreme Council of Abkhazia, and 109 deputies from district sakrebulos - municipal authorities from various regions of the country.
To elect the president, support from 2/3 of the electoral college is required.
The opposition, which is boycotting parliament's work, is not participating in the election. The opposition also did not present their presidential candidate.
Thus, the only candidate for the presidency of Georgia is Mikhail Kavelashvili, a nominee from the ruling party Georgian Dream - Democratic Georgia, a former member of parliament and former footballer.
The presidential inauguration is planned for December 29.
