Georgia restricts foreign support for political parties

The Legal Affairs Committee of the Georgian Parliament has approved a draft law in its first reading, aimed at restricting political parties and individuals involved in electoral activities from receiving donations and grants from foreign legal entities, Report informs, citing Georgian Parliament.

The draft law, initiated by the Georgian Dream faction, prohibits individuals with political purposes from receiving financial assistance through lectures, seminars, or other public events from legal entities registered either in Georgia or abroad. Approval from the Georgian government or an authorized body will be required for receiving grants.

The legislation stipulates that individuals accepting grants without approval will face fines amounting to double the received amount. However, these restrictions will not apply to grants intended for general and higher education, scientific activities, or international sports events.

The authors of the initiative emphasize that the law aims to safeguard the country's sovereignty and prevent foreign influence on domestic political processes.

Once adopted, the draft law will establish a new legal framework for political associations operating in Georgia.
