Georgia may switch to fully proportional voting system

Georgia can switch to a fully-proportional representation voting system.

Report informs that the ruling Georgian Dream Party has taken a political commitment in this regard.

Party chairman Irakli Kobakhidze said that in 2024, a law would be adopted that provides for the holding of the parliamentary and next elections with a proportional system and a 2 per cent electoral threshold. According to him, the Georgian parliament will adopt the law no later than one month after the country receives the status of a candidate for membership in the European Union.

Kobakhidze noted that the Political Council of Georgian Dream and the parliamentary majority assume the political commitment in this regard.

He said that getting the status of a candidate for EU membership of Georgia will firstly help to reduce the level of polarization in the country and then lower the electoral barrier.

The 2020 October parliamentary elections in Georgia were held with a mixed election system, 120 proportional and 30 majoritarian.
