Georgia eyes opening land border with Azerbaijan

The Georgian authorities are planning to open land borders for the summer tourist season, Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia Natia Turnava said, Report informs.

She previously reported that the opening of land borders will take place when the third wave of coronavirus ends.

“The opening of land borders will contribute to a more active flow of tourists from neighboring countries, we are working on this. We think that by the summer season we will be able to open land borders safely, under very serious control, approximately in the same way as was done with the air border,” Turnava told reporters.

Georgian authorities have closed land borders, including with Russia, in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. At the same time, Russian citizens can get to Georgia by plane. Representatives of the Georgian authorities reported that in the context of a pandemic, it is easier to monitor the health of tourists arriving by air than overland.

Georgia shares borders with Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia.
