Georgia and Azerbaijan have begun issuing and exchanging electronic permits for international road freight transport, Report's Georgian bureau informs, citing Georgia's Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development.
Georgian carriers engaged in international freight transport will now use electronic permits in Azerbaijan, as they already do in Türkiye. A similar system has also been applied to transport operations with Türkiye since early July 2026.
Bakur Mikadze, director of the ministry's Land Transport Agency, said the digital system simplifies administrative procedures, speeds up information exchange and minimizes the need for paper documents.
He said the issuance and monitoring of electronic permits make the management of international freight transport more transparent and efficient, significantly reducing the time needed to carry out transport operations.
According to the ministry, under an agreement reached between Georgia and Azerbaijan, 1,000 electronic permits will be exchanged for all types of permit documents in 2026. The system is planned to move fully to a digital format from 2027.
