Farid Shafiyev: Armenians voted for reforms and against Kocharyan’s regime

In the recent parliamentary elections, Armenians voted against the regimes of former presidents Robert Kocharyan and Serzh Sargsyan. They decided to choose the path of continuing reforms in the country, Chairman of the Board of Azerbaijan’s Center for Analysis of International Relations Farid Shafiyev said during the online event ‘Azerbaijanophobia in Armenia: hostility in the pre-war and post-war discourse of Armenians,’ Report informs.

He noted that despite that Nikol Pashinyan, whose party won the early parliamentary elections, positions himself as a Democrat during the election campaign, he made a couple of populist remarks.

“If Armenia follows this path, we won’t achieve peace in the region. Talking about democracy only for Armenians is nationalism. Democracy should be for everyone,” Shafiyev said.

He reminded that it was Pashinyan who gave the order to bomb the civilian population of Ganja.

“Considering all that has been said, it is too early to talk about the direction of the new government’s policy. To begin with, Pashinyan must deal with his diplomatic staff, which is against reconciliation with Azerbaijan,” he said.
