Expert: Iran's exit from NPT to provoke additional tension in Caspian region

If Iran leaves the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, it may provoke addition tension in the Caspian region, Christoph Bluth, a professor of international relations and security at the University of Bradford, told Report.

He said it is not clear whether this is serious or not.

"If Iran leaves the NPT, other states like Russia are formally barred from sharing nuclear materials or information with Iran, they will not be able to obtain fuel for their nuclear power station, so it has negative consequences," he said.

The professor added that it may provoke further sanctions.

"If Iran is perceived to actually possess or be in the process of acquiring a nuclear weapon, then it might provoke military actions by the US and Israel. For now I think this is empty rhetoric," he said.

"My view is that the penalties for leaving the NPT are such that Iran would not do it," he said.
