The current government of Türkiye has suffered the largest number of coup attempts in the country’s history, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said at an event on the Democracy and Freedom Island, dedicated to the anniversary of the coup on May 27, 1960, Report informs.
Erdogan reminded that Türkiye could not escape the whirlpool of unrest and instability for many years.
“After the events of May 27 (1960), similar coup attempts were repeated every 10 years. Everything was repeated according to the same scenario: street riots, protests at universities, paid articles in newspapers. The May 27 scenario was tried many times and over 22 years, which the Justice and Development Party (AKP) is in power. We are the government that has suffered the most coup attempts in Turkish history, but all these attempts have been unsuccessful,” he said.
The Turkish leader also once again emphasized the need to adopt a new “civil constitution” in the country.
He noted that both of the latest constitutions - 1961 and 1982 - were adopted after coups, and "are ideological, and were drawn up by people far from politics."
Türkiye cannot move forward under the current constitution, a new basic law has become a necessity, he added. Erdogan also called on opposition parties to support the adoption of a new constitution during upcoming discussions in parliament.
