Erdogan calls PKK disarmament historic event

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called the voluntary disarmament of PKK militants a historic event in the 47-year fight of the Turkish people against terrorism, Report informs.

The Turkish leader said at a meeting of the ruling party that the PKK militants committed their first terror attack in 1984.

He noted that the terror attacks that continued for almost five decades destabilized the situation in Türkiye, and the country faced an economic burden of almost $2 trillion.

"By laying down its arms, the PKK fulfilled its promise. Thus, the process of ending the 47-year fight against terrorism was launched the day before. This is a new page in history," he said.

The Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), recognized as a terrorist organization in Türkiye, announced its self-dissolution in May of this year. On July 11, the organization confirmed that it voluntarily surrendered and symbolically burned its weapons as part of the disarmament process.
