COVID-19: Iran's tally hits nearly 85k

The head of Iran's Health Ministry's Public Relations Office said on Tuesday that a total of 84,802 have been infected with COVID-19 in Iran, 5,297 have lost their lives.

Kianoush Jahanpour said that 1,297 new affected cases have been detected since yesterday, Report says citing IRNA.

Over the last 24 hours, 88 people died due to the deadly virus, Jahanpour said.

He added that 3,357 patients are in critical condition, and 60,965 patients have recovered from the virus.

The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) emerged in late 2019 in China's Hubei province, and the virus has spread to 210 countries and territories since then.

To date, COVID-19 cases surpassed 2,400,000 globally, resulting in more than 650,000 recoveries and over 170,000 deaths.

On February 11, the WHO officially named the 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) as COVID-19, and on March 11, declared it a pandemic.
