Belarus introduces death penalty for attempted terror attack

The House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus has adopted in two readings amendments to the Criminal Code, which provide for the possibility of applying the death penalty for attempted terror attacks, Report informs referring to the Belarusian media.

The draft law proposes amendments to the Criminal Code of Belarus, providing for the possibility of applying an exceptional measure of punishment in the form of the death penalty for attempted acts of terrorism.

The document was prepared with the aim of “providing a deterrent effect on destructive elements, as well as demonstrating the state’s resolute struggle against terrorist activities.”

Belarus is the only country in Europe and the CIS where the death penalty (firing squad) is applied. The exceptional measure of punishment is applied by the courts of the country for some especially grave crimes involving the deliberate deprivation of a person’s life under aggravating circumstances.
