Armenia's judicial independence deteriorates, European Judges Union warns

The level of judicial independence in Armenia has deteriorated over the past year, according to a statement released by the European Judges Union following a forum held on October 8.

According to Report, the European Judges Union emphasizes that any disciplinary proceedings against judges that could influence the outcome of their cases should be considered interference in their activities.

The Union urges the Armenian authorities to refrain from taking steps that undermine judicial independence and calls on the relevant bodies of the Council of Europe and other organizations to closely monitor the situation in Armenia.

In particular, the European Judges Union expects Armenia to follow the recommendations of the Council of Europe's Venice Commission rather than evading them.
