The process of abolishing visa requirements between Armenia and the European Union is expected to take four to five years, according to Nelli Davtyan, Head of the Migration and Citizenship Service at Armenia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Report informs via Armenian media that negotiations on visa liberalization began in September 2024. Since then, two expert missions have visited Armenia to prepare detailed assessment reports. A concrete action plan is expected to be finalized by June 2025.
One of the major challenges, Davtyan noted, is the implementation of a new biometric system in Armenia:
"We've already started work in this direction, and it has reached a certain stage. Once the action plan is submitted, Yerevan will be required to report annually on its progress," she emphasized.
Only after successfully completing all tasks outlined in the action plan will the visa liberalization process officially begin.
The EU Council approved the European Commission's intention to launch a visa liberalization dialogue with Armenia on July 22, 2024.
