Armenia could apply for EU membership next year, Pashinyan says

Armenia could apply to join the European Union next year, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said at the "Future of Europe" summit organized by Euronews in Brussels, Report informs.

He said recent signals from Brussels had been positive.

"Previously, there were doubts about whether the EU was ready for enlargement. But now there are signs of strong political will for expansion. This means Armenia's and the European Union's expectations could align. That is my assessment of the current situation. At the same time, Armenia also has firm political will to move in this direction," he said.

Pashinyan indicated that Yerevan could submit a formal membership application within the next two years.

"Do you mean submitting an application? We are preparing to do so this year. I do not know how realistic that is, but next year could be realistic. The year 2028 is also possible," he said.

The prime minister added that Armenia was currently focusing on its visa liberalization dialogue with the EU.

"Our goal is to achieve visa liberalization by 2029. This will be another important milestone in the development of our relations with the European Union," Pashinyan said.
