The US Department of the Treasury has imposed sanctions on 36 targets linked to Iran's aviation sector, including 27 Iranian airlines and several foreign companies, Report informs, citing the department.
The Treasury said the measures were taken by its Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) under Operation Economic Outcast and target all remaining active Iranian airlines. The sanctions also cover companies and intermediaries that Washington says have helped Iran acquire US-origin aircraft and aviation technology.
Among those sanctioned are Türkiye-based Sky Phoenix, S Sistem and Mes Cargo, as well as companies and individuals based in the UAE, UK, Malaysia and Kazakhstan. The Treasury accused some of these entities of providing aircraft procurement, cargo or sales services to sanctioned Iranian carrier Mahan Air.
OFAC also suspended three Iran-related aviation authorizations, including provisions that had allowed certain overflights and non-US airlines to operate US-origin or US-controlled commercial aircraft into Iran. Aviation safety-related requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Separately, the Treasury's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network issued an alert asking financial institutions to watch for and report suspicious activity involving networks used to procure aircraft and aircraft parts for Iran.
