US postpones deliveries of Volcano systems to Taiwan until 2026

Taiwan is set to receive all 14 Volcano Vehicle-Launched Scatterable Mine Systems purchased from the US by 2026, Report informs referring to Taiwan News.

Originally, the systems were planned to be delivered in multiple batches, with the first reaching Taiwan in 2024, Liberty Times reported. However, the latest plan is for all 14 sets to be delivered in one shipment. The military remains in close communication with the US regarding potential schedule adjustments.

According to the 2025 defense budget, the total cost of the mine systems, including logistical support, is NT$4.89 billion ($152.90 million). Once delivered, the Volcano systems will be distributed among the three Army Corps engineering units in northern, central, and southern Taiwan.

Additionally, mobile teams have been formed within these corps by combining engineer units with mechanized infantry battalions. These teams are responsible for quickly deploying barriers and mines in strategic locations, such as roads and bridges, and during emergencies.

The Army Command said the mine-laying system would help block enemy movements in coastal areas. It targets enemy armored vehicles with fast deployment capabilities.

The system features timed detonation and magnetic sensors. The mines are easily recognizable and removable, minimizing the risk to friendly forces and civilians.

The Army stressed that the system complies with domestic and international regulations and balances humanitarian concerns with operational needs to deter the enemy effectively.
