Unrest in Martinique: 12 gendarmes injured amid ongoing protests

Amid ongoing unrest on the island of Martinique, 12 gendarmes were injured during clashes between Wednesday night and Thursday morning, Report informs via AFP. One of the officers suffered a gunshot wound.

Social media platforms are flooded with numerous videos depicting the chaos, including a burning barricade on the ring road of Fort-de-France and projectiles being thrown at vehicles by protesters.

The unrest, which began in September, is driven by the Movement for the Defense of Afro-Caribbean Peoples and Resources, who are demanding action against the high cost of living on the island. Today, it faces significant economic challenges, with food prices reportedly 40% higher than in mainland France.

Protesters are demanding that food prices in Martinique be brought in line with those in continental France.
