Uncovering hidden dangers: Euronews reports on Azerbaijan's landmine problem

Euronews has aired a report highlighting the landmine issue in Europe, with a particular focus on Azerbaijan.

According to Report, the segment coincides with the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action.

It emphasizes that Europe continues to grapple with the landmine problem, especially due to conflicts in Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Ukraine.

Featured in the piece is the testimony of Hasanali Aliyev, a landmine victim, alongside representatives from Azerbaijan's National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA).

"I was 23 when I stepped on a landmine," Aliyev shared. The explosion resulted in the amputation of his leg.

According to the United Nations, a person dies or is injured by a landmine every hour on average worldwide, with children and young people often among the victims.

Euronews highlights that the Azerbaijani government is actively engaged in demining efforts and raising public awareness about the dangers posed by landmines.

"Efficient mine clearance, combined with the reconstruction and rehabilitation of liberated territories, presents a long-term challenge," stated the head of ANAMA's methodology and training department in the report.

The footage also underscores the importance of continued awareness efforts, particularly for civilians living in war-affected regions like those impacted by the landmines, including individuals like Hasanali Aliyev.

Experts cited by Euronews estimate that up to 10 million landmines may be planted across 64 countries, with an additional 2 to 5 million devices being laid each year.
