UN warns of risk of 'irrational' use of nuclear weapons

The idea that "nuclear weapons supposedly provide maximum security" is wrong, UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Izumi Nakamitsu said in an interview with RBC, Report informs.

In her opinion, the only way to neutralize the nuclear threat is to completely destroy the stockpiles of such weapons.

"As long as these weapons exist, there is a threat of their potential use - intentional or as a result of miscalculation. Supporters of nuclear deterrence consider this concept regrettable, but necessary; signatories of the TPNW (Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons - ed.) are increasingly questioning it - not only on moral grounds, but also for strategic and practical reasons," the UN under-secretary-general said.
