UN сhief sounds alarm over violent crackdown on Kenyan protests

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has voiced his profound concern regarding reports of violence during the suppression of protests in Kenya.

According to Report, Guterres' official spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, said, "The Secretary-General is saddened by reports of fatalities and injuries, including among journalists and medical personnel. He is also deeply troubled by accounts of targeted arbitrary detentions."

Kenya, a country with a population of over 50 million, has been experiencing a wave of protests in recent weeks. These demonstrations are primarily driven by economic grievances, including the rising cost of living and controversial tax hikes. The situation has escalated, leading to clashes between protesters and security forces.

In light of these developments, Guterres has called on Kenyan authorities to exercise restraint in their response to the protests. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that "all demonstrations are conducted peacefully."
