UN Sec.-Gen. trying to resolve conflict in Sudan

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that, together with representatives of the African Union and the Arab League, he is trying to find a solution to the conflict in Sudan, Report informs referring to TASS.

“Over the weekend, I spoke with both Sudanese leaders. I am actively working with the African Union and the Arab League, as well as the leaders of the states of the region,” Guterres said at the development forum of the UN Economic and Social Council.

Guterres called on the parties in Sudan to stop fighting. “The situation has already led to horrendous losses, including among the civilian population. Further escalation could be devastating for the country and the region,” he said.

The situation in Sudan escalated due to disagreements between army commander Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who also leads the Sovereign Council, and the head of the rapid reaction forces, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemetti), who is his deputy in this body. On April 15, clashes began near the military base in the city of Merov and Khartoum.

More than 100 civilians have been killed in the fighting, according to the latest data from the Central Committee of Sudan Doctors, and the World Health Organization reports more than 1,000 casualties.
