UN: Overwhelming majority of Afghans flee to Pakistan and Iran

Every week, 24,000-30,000 Afghans leave Afghanistan, most of whom flee to Pakistan and Iran, Caroline Van Buren, the representative in Afghanistan for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, told reporters, the European bureau of Report informs.

More than two million people have taken refuge in Pakistan, and more than a million Afghan refugees in Iran, she said.

Since the beginning of this year, about 400,000 people have had to flee their homes in Afghanistan, she noted.

Those who left Afghanistan before the events of the last days have visas and permits to reside in other countries, she said, adding that the UN sees people fleeing without documents for their safety.
