UN General Assembly wants to receive clarification on veto cases in Security Council

The UN General Assembly can vote on a draft resolution that gives it the right to receive clarifications on each case of a veto by a permanent member of the Security Council of the organization, Report informs referring to Anadolu Agency.

“If this draft resolution is approved on April 26, the UN General Assembly will have the opportunity to meet within 10 days after a permanent member of the UN Security Council vetoes a particular resolution to discuss the problem and demand a report on the reason for blocking the decision,” the report said.

The agency reports that the reform of the UN system has become particularly relevant against the backdrop of the Ukrainian crisis.

To overcome the current situation, at the initiative of Liechtenstein, a draft resolution was prepared imposing on the countries with the right of veto the obligation to explain the reasons for blocking a particular document. Even before being submitted to the UN General Assembly, the document was supported by 57 states, including the US.

The UN General Assembly, which consists of 193 states, is called upon to serve as a guarantor of global peace, but the five permanent members of the UN Security Council (the US, China, Russia, the UK and France), using their veto power, often turn this world organization into an incapable platform for responding to crises, according to the report.
