Belize's ambassador to UN emphasizes focus on territorial integrity and self-determination

During a press conference at the Baku Initiative Group (BIG) office, Belize's Ambassador to the United Nations, Carlos Fuller, stressed the importance of focusing on territorial integrity and the goal of independence, according to Report.

"This is a great struggle. Countries need to fight for their freedom," he stated, commending the work of the Baku Initiative Group in their efforts to combat colonialism.

Ambassador Fuller shared Belize's own experience, having achieved independence in 1981 after a long and persevering struggle.

"Striving for independence is a long struggle that requires perseverance and a demonstration of your core principles," he emphasized, highlighting that the main goal has always been the self-determination of the people and the restoration of territorial integrity.

Describing the process as a marathon, Fuller noted the challenges involved: "It's an extremely difficult process. You have to get people to join your struggle. Then you have to make your voice heard around the world to gain the full support of the international community."

He stressed the importance of raising global awareness about the struggle for self-determination, citing the example of the people of Bonaire.

Recounting Belize's journey, Fuller explained, "It took us until 1981 to achieve independence. We had to convince our neighbors to the north. Panama and Caribbean countries joined us, and we spread the message to a wider audience, engaging Europe, Africa, and East Asian countries."

He highlighted the crucial role of global solidarity in their independence struggle, stating, "All these countries around the world supported our fight for independence. This allowed us to approach the United Nations and become a member of the United Nations."
