Although the economic downturn caused by the spread of novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) has led to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions this year, global temperatures increase, Report says, citing United Nations Environment Program (UN).
The expected reduction in emissions in 2020 will lessen global warming by only 1 degree until 2050.
However, if greenhouse gas pollution is not reduced, the Earth's heat could rise by more than 3 degrees by 2030. It is higher than the temperature set under the Paris Climate Agreement.
The most important greenhouse gas is carbon dioxide (CO2), which has been released into the atmosphere by humans due to industry development. These gases cover the inner layers of the atmosphere and prevent heat from escaping from the Earth. The Earth is continuously heating up because it cannot reflect the solar energy received.
