Tibet records 49 aftershocks after 6.8 magnitude earthquake

Seismologists recorded 49 aftershocks following a 6.8 magnitude earthquake in the Tibet Autonomous Region in southwestern China, Report informs via the Chinese seismological center.

The 6.8 magnitude earthquake occurred on Tuesday at 9:05 local time in the Tingri County of Shigatse Prefecture in the Tibet Autonomous Region, with the earthquake's focus at a depth of 10 kilometers.

"As of 12:00 on January 7, a total of 49 aftershocks have been recorded, including 33 aftershocks with magnitude below 3.0, 16 aftershocks with magnitude 3.0 and above, specifically 13 with magnitude from 3.0 to 3.9, and three with magnitude from 4.0 to 4.9. The maximum aftershock with magnitude 4.4 was recorded approximately 18 kilometers from the epicenter of the main shock," the center's statement says.
