Switzerland won’t reduce the size of its armed forces from the current 147,000 to the legally established 140,000, Report informs referring to TASS.
This decision was made by the government of the country (Federal Council), motivating this step by the “current geopolitical situation.”
“The Federal Council considers it inappropriate to reduce the actual size of the army in the current geopolitical situation,” the government said in a statement published on its website.
The government has instructed the Federal Department of Defense, Community Protection and Sports to “develop draft legislative amendments” in order to “be able to temporarily exceed the established maximum number” of military personnel.
Bern explained that the current legislation establishes “the normative strength of the army at 100,000 people, and the actual strength is 140,000.” At the same time, “the real number today is 147,000 military personnel.”
