Switzerland sees first death from coronavirus

The first death from coronavirus (COVID-19) in Switzerland was recorded in the country’s Vaud canton, Report informs via RIA Novosti.

Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV) said a 74-year-old patient infected with COVID-19 and hospitalized on March 3 died in the early hours of March 5, 2020.

The patient reportedly had underlying chronic diseases.

Chinese authorities announced an outbreak of pneumonia in Wuhan on December 31, 2019. The causative agent of the disease is a new type of coronavirus, which is given the official name COVID-19.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported on March 4 that the organization registered 1,922 new coronavirus cases worldwide within 24 hours, with 1,792 in China.

The total number of coronavirus cases was 54 in Switzerland, 39 of which were confirmed by laboratory tests.
