Six more bodies found floating in Ganga in India's Uttar Pradesh

Six more bodies of suspected COVID-19 victims were found floating in the Ganga river in India's Uttar Pradesh state, an official said, Report informs via Indian media.

Fatehpur Sadar Tehsil Sub-Collector (SDM) Pramod Jha said he was informed about the bodies floating in the river on Sunday morning, following which a search operation was launched.

Six decomposed bodies were recovered from the river, he said.

Later in the day, a team of doctors performed the last rites at Bhitora Ganga Ghat as per the Covid guidelines, the SDM said.

The bodies could not be identified as they were highly decomposed, the SDM said, adding that they appear to have come floating from far-off places.

Earlier in May, the Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar reported the discovery of more than 100 floating human bodies in the Ganga. Presumably, these may be the remains of coronavirus victims. State police have launched an investigation into the incident. According to local residents, the reason for the dumping of the bodies is the high cost of cremation or self-organizing funeral pyres amidst the pandemic.
