The Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Korea plans to create a strategic command that will deal with containing the nuclear threat from the DPRK, reads a statement from the defense department following a meeting between Shin Won-sik and representatives of the armed forces command, Report informs referring to TASS.
“The meeting participants confirmed that they will strive to create by the second half of 2024 a separate strategic command responsible for strengthening the practical capabilities of extended deterrence and responding to the nuclear [threat from] North Korea. Efforts will be made to create a system for the implementation of combined arms operations of nuclear forces and conventionally armed troops of the Republic of Korea and the US in accordance with the situation on the Korean Peninsula,” reads the statement.
At the meeting, Defense Minister Shin Won-sik also said that North Korea would face “hellish destruction” if Pyongyang engaged in provocations and undermined peace on the Korean Peninsula.
