S. Korea's Constitutional Court to hold first debate on president's impeachment on January 14

The Constitutional Court of the Republic of Korea will hold the first oral arguments in the impeachment case of President Yoon Suk Yeol on January 14, according to the court's press service, Report informs via TASS.

On January 3, the Constitutional Court held the second preliminary hearing in the impeachment case, which was attended by the president's lawyers and representatives of the National Assembly (parliament), which voted to remove the president from power in December.

Representatives of the parliament said that "the rebellion continues," pointing out that law enforcement agencies have not been able to arrest Yoon Suk Yeol, despite having a warrant for a criminal case on rebellion, due to the resistance of the security service.

Yoon Suk Yeol's lawyers insisted that evidence indicating the criminal nature of the head of state's actions is needed. "We do not recommend using the term 'rebellion,'" the president's lawyer said.

The first debate will take place a month after the parliament impeached Yoon Suk Yeol on December 14. On the evening of December 3, for the first time in decades, Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law in order to combat "pro-North Korean elements and the paralysis" of the executive branch due to the actions of the parliamentary opposition, which was lifted about six hours later.
