Riots kill 212 in South Africa

The death toll from a week-long riot over the arrest of former South African President Jacob Zuma has risen to 212, Report informs, citing SABC News.

Acting Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni briefs the media:

"Six deaths were reported, and cumulative deaths have become 32 in Gauteng; 137 additional arrests were made and South African National Defence force deployment supporting the SAPS remains in Gauteng in the potential hotspots. In KwaZulu-Natal, 1,488 cases were reported overnight other 89 deaths were reported. The cumulative number of deaths in KZN is 180, and law enforcement continues to monitor the situation in that province which is stable closely."

Jacob Zuma, President of the country from 2009 to 2018, was arrested for 15 months last week as part of an investigation into large-scale corruption in government agencies at the time.
