Restoration of ancient Citadel of Aleppo begins in Syria

Experts in Syria started to restore the Citadel of Aleppo, which was attacked by militants, chief engineer of the project, Amina Sabuni, told reporters, Report informs referring to RIA Novosti.

According to experts, the architectural monument was destroyed by 20 percent. They are now recreating the northern and eastern walls of the citadel, which suffered the most. Some of the towers were destroyed entirely.

“We conducted a study - we determined the degree of destruction. Initially, we wanted to use the original stone, that is, to return the citadel to its original appearance, but in some places, the destruction is severe. We have to use modern material,” Amina Sabuni added.

In 1986, the Citadel of Aleppo was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site among the monuments of the Ancient City of Aleppo.
