Peru to declare state of emergency to unblock roads

A state of emergency will be introduced on the roads in Peru to unblock them, Report informs, citing Minister of Defense Alberto Otarola.

According to him, against the backdrop of mass protests in the country, the Armed Forces were ordered to immediately take strategic facilities under protection.

"A state of emergency will be declared on the national road network to ensure the free passage of all Peruvians," the minister announced after the State Council meeting.

According to the RPP channel, a state of emergency can be declared at the national level. President Dina Boluarte expressed her hope that the authorities "will not have to go to extremes."

The unrest in Peru began after the impeachment of President Pedro Castillo on December 7. He was detained on charges of sedition and abuse of power. His post was transferred to his deputy Mrs. Boluarte. She was scheduled to remain in office until July 26, 2026, but due to protests, she proposed holding early elections in 2024. Today, December 14, the new Cabinet of Ministers of Peru was sworn in.
