Peru’s president calls for early elections in 2024

Peruvian President Dina Boluarte has proposed holding elections in the country ahead of schedule, in April 2024, Report informs referring to the local news agency Andina.

She announced that she would coordinate this initiative with Congress. Protests have erupted in Peru over the impeachment of former President Pedro Castillo.

Boluarte, amid mass riots across the country that have been ongoing since the end of last week, addressed a message to the nation. She declared a state of emergency in the areas where the protests took place.

On December 7, the Parliament of Peru announced the impeachment of Castillo. He was detained on charges of rebellion and abuse of power. His post was transferred to his deputy Boluarte. On December 8, she took the oath and planned to remain in office until July 26, 2026.
