New Caledonian minister appeares on French TV with logo of Baku Initiative Group

The traditional commemoration day for independence fighters was observed in New Caledonia on January 12.

According to Report, speaking at the commemoration ceremony in Canala commune, New Caledonia government member and minister Mickael Forrest discussed the importance of participating in this event, noting that it honors the determination and courage of leaders who fought for independence.

In response to recent attacks against Azerbaijan by French officials and their supporters in New Caledonia, Minister Forrest showed solidarity with Azerbaijan by appearing in front of the French state television channel Franceinfo.1 wearing headgear featuring the logo of the Baku Initiative Group.

The supporters of official Paris in New Caledonia immediately reacted by criticizing Forrest.

On January 14, Philippe Blaise, a member of the New Caledonia Congress (Parliament) and also the 1st Vice-President of the Southern Region, called Minister Forrest "Baku's helmet," escalating tensions.

Exactly 40 years ago - on January 12, 1985, prominent members of the Kanak and Socialist National Liberation Front (FLNKS) fighting for New Caledonia's independence, Eloi Machoro and Marcel Nonnaro, were brutally killed by French soldiers.

Since this incident, January 12 has been observed as a commemoration day in New Caledonia.
